Environmental Neglect
Every Tom, Dick, and Harry we meet is probably aware of global warming, risks, and degradation, so why are we failing to completely address the issue? At this time, awareness is not the issue; the issue is that we are aware and capable of lessening the harm and repercussions, but there is a complete disregard for the problem. Why is this the case? We are taught the necessity of conservation in school, yet just a few people in each generation devote their time to environmental management. What exactly is the problem here? Is it an issue of human nature, or is it the capitalist way of thinking that has been instilled in us?
People are interested in numbers, figures, and facts. Simple statements will certainly not enough. Statistics are inadequate, knowledge about what happens in the foot long lists of conferences we have to memorise are lacking, especially in Geography and any type of environmental science. We are taught about the existence of specific groups and eco-friendly organisations, but we have no idea what happens there. To get people to pay attention to the issue, we must offer them raw information that will shock them, even shrivel their core, just enough to scare them into comprehending the true nature of the situation. "Risk of inaction is considerable, time is running out," as the old adage goes.
On the other hand, in other circumstances, entire nations lack the financial resources to even consider conservation; instead, they ignore the issue and strive to avoid it as much as possible. Degradation is simply a way of life here, something that will "eventually happen." What these countries fail to recognise is that conservation is not a financial issue. Some countries, such as Namibia, thrive as a result of these conservation efforts, which also serve as a source of revenue. Sustainable living, like most people believe, will not take pennies out of your pocket, but will instead present a clear option to help you save money. Sustainability implies reducing some of the amenities you might otherwise use and replacing them with simpler, less destructive alternatives.
However, the poisonous resource optimist rushes out of you and tells you that "plenty is already being done to help the environment." However, the truth is that not enough is being done. Why are we still grappling with environmental issues in a world of fast technological advancement? Why is there such a significant gap in our understanding of how to solve these problems? Why, despite all of these agendas and forums, is the Barrier Reef still largely dormant? Who are these capitalists trying to dupe? Do all of these firms' sustainability reports actually mean anything? Have you been duped into believing that? Will you be the target of these efforts? Get up.
