Marble is metamorphosed limestone, or limestone that has been melted and resolidified. If the original limestone is calcite, the marble is calcite (i.e., mostly CaCO3); if the original limestone is dolomitic, the marble is either dolomitic or magnesian (i.e., mostly CaMg (CO3)2). The term marble is frequently used in nongeological contexts to refer to any hard, calcite rock that can be cut or polished, including some unmetamorphosed limestones. However, in geology, it is only used for metamorphosed limestones.

Since antiquity, certain marbles have been valued for sculpture and architectural purposes. Marbles prized for statuary are usually quite pure (i.e., white in colour and free of inclusions or marks) and reflect light softly or semitranslucently due to their property of allowing some incident light to penetrate to a depth of about an inch (1-2.5 cm) before reflecting light softly or semitranslucently.

Some marbles with vibrant patterning are used in decorative architecture. Marble patterning is caused by trace minerals, most commonly silicates (e.g., quartz, olivine, garnet), graphite, pyrite, and organic substances. Impurities may have been introduced by the magma that metamorphosed the original limestone.

Wrinkled thin layers that appear as sinuous lines in cross-section are common in marbles. These layers are known as stylolites. Stylolites are silicates or other accessory minerals that are darker in colour than the surrounding marble. They do not form as sedimentary layers in the original limestone, but rather as a result of water selectively removing limestone. Calcite is a highly soluble mineral; when infiltrating water dissolves some of the original limestone, the fine particles that remain are compacted into an irregular layer known as stylolite. A comparison of accessory mineral concentrations in adjacent marble and stylolites reveals that 40% or more of a limestone bed may be dissolved during the stylolitization process.
