This Time Of Year
This is supposed to be the best time of year and yet there lingers a foreboding premonition of turbulent times ahead. Remembering back to my childhood years Christmas seasons for many were filled with anticipated wonderment especially on Christmas Eve. That wonder was often fulfilled on Christmas morning. I guess for some today that can be true. But, for far too many all over the world there is no anticipated wonderment on the night before only vague images of what Christmas morning ought to be. Many have never had a chance to experience for themselves the joys of the season never escaping the drudgery of their daily lives during this time of year.
Today, our society is too caught up in materialistic values forsaking the fellowship of mankind. Too many of us are caught up in a whirlwind of selfish desires unwilling and incapable of accepting the true meaning of good will toward all. With the world moving at a pace far to quick to even catch our breath we ought to remember back to a much slower and similar time even though the world had it's troubles much can be said of the refinement that our society had. The goodwill spread from town to town even though there were pockets of despair but not like there is today.
From impeachment hearings of a very divided nation, to a political season wearing thin, and the Trump tariffs all have had very negative affects that continue to further undermine an already deteriorating significance of what this time of year should really be about.
One cannot help think the years have not been kind. As I have gotten older I have seen much decay of the true meaning of Christmas. The unacceptance, the outright bigotry, and distain of others that are different and yet we are all the same have made this time of year being filled with empty promises of a better future for all.
As we approach another year I wonder though will those foreboding premonitions hold true or will we somehow manage to regain the virtue and values of a distant past? We ought to remember that those values and virtues of our past forged a strong and vibrant nation. So, this Christmas season as we trudge off to the store let us teach our children what it takes to make a better world for all. Understanding the meaning of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" is an eternal part of realizing what this time of year is all about and ought to be all year long.
