Air Pollution: The Most Common Types

Air pollution is the result of harmful airborne substances. They are found in the form of solids, liquids, and gases. As a matter of fact, these natural processes facilitate the spread of air pollution. Many of these particles are generated due to volcanic activity and the emission of sulfur and chlorine gases. Besides, when wildfires, biological decay, and dust storms happen, they also raise the pollution level in the air. In this article, we are going to talk about 5 types of air pollution caused by human activities. Read on to find out more.

Nitrogen Dioxide

As far as Nitrogen dioxide is concerned, vehicle emissions are the biggest source. Besides, power plants and factories also generate these pollutants. Besides, volcanic activities, lightning, and the decaying process of organic matter may also generate a large amount of nitrogen dioxide. The thing is that nitrogen dioxide may generate smog that produces harmful among in the sunlight.

Ozone (O3)

Although the atmosphere creates ozone, it does not create at the surface. According to experts, ozone is the second biggest air pollutant in the troposphere. Ozone occurs due to the chemical reaction between air and other types of pollutants.

Moreover, ozone forms when there is a reaction between volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxide in the presence of sunlight. In the summer, ground-level ozone is at high levels. Smoke is another type of pollutant. It consists of toxins, particulate matter, and a wide range of other chemicals.

Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)

Sulfur dioxide is the source of the smell that you can smell when you burn a match stick. According to experts, sulfur dioxide is formed due to human activity. Another major source is volcanoes. Apart from this, some other sources include mineral ores, gas, oil, and coal.

As a matter of fact, the burning process of these materials may also release a lot of toxic sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. Besides, when it reacts with droplets of water in the air, it may turn into sulfuric acid that can cause acid rain.

Lead (Pb)

Lead is on the list of heavy metals that can be found underground. As a matter of fact, this type of heavy metal becomes part of the air through the processing of metals and the burning of fuel of aircraft and vehicles. When this was removed from gasoline, it helped bring the lead level down by 98%.

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

When something burns, this process releases carbon monoxide. According to experts, this is one of the most common gases. Moreover, most of this type of pollution is generated when fossil fuels are burned in power plants, factories, hand vehicles. Apart from this, the burning of crop waste is another major cause of the generation of carbon monoxide.

In short, this was an introduction to five types of air pollution that can be controlled if proper measures are taken. If you are worried about your indoor air pollution, a good air purifier is your friend. It can help you purify your indoor here in an efficient manner.
